Prosthesis training

The important prosthesis training phase begins for you once you have been fitted with a prosthesis. Making it possible for you to use the prosthesis so it actually helps you in your daily life is the goal. At the outset, an occupational therapist helps you practice movement patterns such as eating or getting dressed. With special exercises, you learn to position the prosthesis correctly to achieve an optimum position for grasping. Once you are sufficiently confident in using your prosthesis, you practice controlling your muscle strength. Items like foam rubber, drinking straws or paper cups help you determine the various amounts of pressure your muscle contractions can produce, and how this affects materials and solidity.

  • How do I control my prosthetic hand?

    You control your SensorHand Speed or VariPlus Speed prosthetic hand with the help of myoelectric signals. These signals can be measured on the skin surface as soon as you tense certain forearm muscles. Sensors in the socket called electrodes pick up the signals so that they can be converted and ultimately control the motor that moves the hand. This is how you open and close the hand.

  • How do I learn how to control the prosthesis with muscle signals?

    Training the muscle signals is perhaps comparable to learning an instrument: practicing regularly is very important. If your socket is properly fitted and your musculature is in good condition, you should already see major progress after about 3 months.

  • Can I type on a computer keyboard with the VariPlus Speed and SensorHand Speed?

    While this is of course possible in principle, it does require practice since you operate the keyboard with the thumb.

  • How long will the battery last?

    We recommend charging the battery overnight. It is integrated in the socket and can be removed separately and charged. The battery lasts for one day depending on the activity level and the chosen capacity.

  • Can I open the hand mechanically?

    If the battery is not charged, you can open the prosthetic hand mechanically as well. Your orthopaedic technician will practice this with you.

  • Are suitable prosthesis gloves available for the two prosthetic hands?
